Who is Eligible for SDA Funding?

If you're eligible for SDA funding, SDA housing may be an option for you. Use the following checklist as a guide for your SDA eligibility.


✔ NDIS Participants
✔ Aged 18 to 65
✔ Significant physical limitations (Extreme Functional Impairment)
✔ Approved, or on the path to approval, for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding in your NDIS plan.


This can include people with a significant and permanent disability resulting from accidents or other causes, including:

  • Brain injury
  • Spinal injury
  • Stroke
  • Chronic or degenerative disease

Even with appropriate housing supports, Participants eligible for SDA will still need a lot of help:

  • Getting out of bed
  • Moving around
  • Preparing meals
  • Completing personal care tasks
  • Accessing the community

  • Their family/friends are absent or unable to provide this support or
  • the participant has spent a long time in a group home or Residential Aged Care or
  • the participant poses a risk to themselves or others

SDA Design Categories

Fully Accessible

Definition

Housing that has been designed to incorporate a high level of physical access provision for people with significant physical impairment

Minimum Requirements

Liveable Housing Australia ‘Platinum’ level External doors and external outdoor private areas to be accessible by wheelchair Bathroom vanity/hand basin to be accessible in seated or standing position Power supply to doors and windows (blinds), for retrofit of automation as necessary Consideration must be given to whether it is appropriate for the kitchen sink, cooktop, meal preparation bench area and key appliances (dishwasher, oven, microwave oven, laundry appliances) to be accessible in seated or standing position

SDA Design Categories

High Physical Support

Definition

Housing that has been designed to incorporate a high level of physical access provision for people with significant physical impairment and requiring very high levels of support.

Minimum Requirements

All requirements listed in the ‘Fully Accessible’ design category, plus: Structural provision for ceiling hoists Assistive technology ready Heating/cooling and household communication technology (e.g. video or intercom appropriate for the needs of residents Emergency power solutions to cater for a minimum two hour outage where the welfare of participants is at risk 950mm minimum clear opening width doors to all habitable rooms
